Underwater

Hapco manufactures many polyurethanes, epoxies, and dispensing machines that are used by the offshore industry. For decades, Hapco’s Hapflex™ and Di-Pak™ materials have been used to mold seals, deep water flowline coatings, and a wide array of components on manned and unmanned underwater vehicles.

Hydrophpobic elastomers, such as our Di-Pak™ 4888, have been used to pot and encapsulate electronic devices that will be submersed in seawater. These components can spend several years underwater, either continuously or intermittently, and the material selected must retain its mechanical properties.

If you’re looking for specialty polyurethane or epoxy formulas, you’ve come to the right place. For over 50 years, Hapco has been formulating, manufacturing, and distributing specialty thermoset resins that withstand harsh conditions at extreme ocean depths.

Our products are perfect for a variety of underwater applications, including but not limited to the following:

  • Sealing leaks
  • Repairing cracks
  • Protecting against corrosion
  • Strengthening weak areas
  • Encapsulating electronics

With over 50 years of experience, Hapco has the resins and equipment for all your underwater projects.

How do epoxies and polyurethanes work underwater?

Epoxies and polyurethanes are two of the most popular types of waterproof sealants on the market. But how do they work? Let’s take a closer look.

Epoxy is another plastic type made from two chemical compounds: resins and hardeners. When mixed, these two substances chemically react, generate heat, and ultimately cure to form a powerful bond.

In the early 1970s, two-component epoxies started gaining popularity for fiberglass boat repairs because of their superior moisture resistance and ability to bond to various substrates. Epoxy coatings are still commonly used in boatbuilding and repairs because they can resist water damage and keep surfaces dry.

Polyurethane is a type of plastic made up of small molecules called monomers. These monomers link together to form long chains, providing strength and flexibility to the finished product. Like epoxies, they form a tight, water-resistant seal and don’t require air or heat to solidify, as some adhesives do. Applications that require UV-stable, water-clear resins will typically use a polyurethane resin. Hapco’s Ultraclear 480N series meets these needs and then some. It protects electronics, seals cracks, and bonds dissimilar substrates.

Our Products for Underwater Applications

We are a leading manufacturer of polyurethanes, epoxies, and dispensing machines. Our Hapflex and Di-Pak™ products are an excellent fit for various underwater applications, including seals, coatings, and components on both manned and unmanned underwater vehicles.

Combining the moisture resistance of epoxy with the versatility of polyurethanes, Hapflex™ is our line of high-performance hybrid resins. These semi-rigid rubbers and plastics provide a range of durometers and cure times for molding or repairing parts (i.e., stair pads, gaskets). On the other hand, Di-Pak™ is an epoxy encapsulation and potting compound often utilized to protect electronic devices from water damage. Both products are perfect for ensuring a watertight seal in underwater applications.

Advantages of using polyurethanes and epoxies in underwater applications

Polyurethanes and epoxies offer several benefits for underwater applications.

  • They are waterproof and non-porous, making them ideal for sealing surfaces against water damage.
  • They are also durable and resistant to many chemicals, making them ideal for protecting surfaces in harsh environments.
  • They can be applied in thin coats, making them ideal for surface coating applications where a smooth, professional finish is required.
  • They cure quickly, making them ideal for time-sensitive projects.
